Find your perfect swing rhythm and tempo

Finding the right tempo and rhythm for your golf swing is important as it can help you turn an off day into a good day.

Sometimes the swing just doesn’t feel right and having a way to measure your tempo and then get it back can be the thing that turns your game around.

When on the golf course, the last thing you want to be doing is trying to fix a technical fault in the swing.

Being able to find your tempo and rhythm may not fix the technical fault, but it will often help you to get the ball round the course before you get to the practice ground.

I like to use this drill as it will give you a way to measure and therefore find your way back to your rhythm. It can also help you slow down your back swing if you have the tendency to get a bit quick.

The 5 ball drill: Improve your rhythm and timing

This is a drill that will really get you focused on the timing of your swing.

There is no chance of completing the 5 balls if you are rushing, hitting or getting jerky with your swing.

We are going to hit 5 balls all in one continuous motion, one after the other.

Derek who normally has a short and slightly quick swing finds this drill difficult, but see and feels a huge difference after doing it.

The aim here is not to be hitting each of the balls perfectly towards the target, but to make solid contact out the sweet spot if possible on each of them.

When this starts to get easy, add into the motion a point where you say to yourself hit and time it at the point of impact.

This will make it a little harder, but will also help you to get your timing even more in tune with the speed of your swing.

The Stop and Go Drill: Feel your top of backswing position

Often when learning a new move in the swing it becomes difficult to put it into play as the swing is a dynamic movement.

To help you with this we like to use the stop and go drill. This drill splits the backswing from the downswing and gives you the time to think about the swing in 2 sections.

It could be that you are working on and movement on the backswing, such as getting the wrist hinge correct.

This would take place on the way back and when you stop at the top you will be able to feel if it is in position and then concentrate on the downswing move.

In the video Derek was working on completing his shoulder turn as in his swing he has a tendency to start down too early and not finish his turn.

It can also be useful if you are working on something on the downswing as you can then make your backswing, stop and then have the time to concentrate on the next move down.

But remember, technical practice should be followed up with feel practice and then pressure practice.

Make sure you are working in a way that helps you play better, not just look better. (Although it’s always nice!)

Hitting balls with your eyes closed really gets you focused!

Sometimes when you practice a lot you end up getting stuck on things and forget what really matters. Impact!

This drill will really quickly get your mind back focused on what matters.

I love this drill as people really surprise themselves with how well they can hit the ball.

By swinging with the eyes closed you learn to FEEL every movement you make and learn to feel where the club is and where it is going.

If you understand what needs to happen with the club through impact to hit the shot shape you want, this drill will really help you to focus on doing it.

Start out with practice swings, you’ll find out quickly if you are balanced or not. Then you will start to feel things in the swing you hadn’t realised were happening.

After making practice swings and you have some good feelings, try hitting a shot.

Really make sure to visualise the shot in flight and the swing shape to make it. Please make sure you have a safe space to hit to before closing the eyes, then give it a go.

Most people expect to miss the ball completely, yet almost everyone ends up hitting it better than they could have imagined.

Working a new technique into your game

This is a method I was taught by Adam Hunter back in 1999 on how to practice a new move into my own game and still be able to go out and play tournament golf.

Changing things in your swing doesn’t come easily. Taking what you are working on in practice to the course is even harder.

This will hopefully help you in both regards.

In the video we show Derek working on a new move in the backswing. On day one (the day of the lesson) he will split the practice balls he hits into 3 piles. 6 balls, 4 balls and 2 balls.

He will make lots of practice swings before each ball and will hit the first 6 balls in a step by step fashion working on the new move.

The next 4 balls he will swing in slow motion trying to feel himself going through the new move before swinging on and hitting the ball.

The final 2 balls will be as he would on the course. Aiming at a target and trying to hit a draw or a fade to the target. There should be now conscious technique thoughts for these shots.

This first sessions is clearly stacked in favour of working on the technique.

He may do the same thing in the next session too.

By the third session, Derek should be moving on to less technical thoughts and more ball flight thoughts, so he will reduce the balls in the first pile and add to the last pile.

4 technique/ 4 slowmo/ 4 target

He may do this for 2 sessions before then reversing the original piles so that he finishes the week hitting:

2 technique/ 4 slowmo/ 6 target

By practising in this manner you have a structure and a plan for getting the technical aspects of the swing improving, but also still working on getting the ball out there to the target.

Golf is not all about pretty swings (or we would never have heard of Jim Furyk!) it’s about getting the ball in the hole.
