Working a new technique into your game

This is a method I was taught by Adam Hunter back in 1999 on how to practice a new move into my own game and still be able to go out and play tournament golf.

Changing things in your swing doesn’t come easily. Taking what you are working on in practice to the course is even harder.

This will hopefully help you in both regards.

In the video we show Derek working on a new move in the backswing. On day one (the day of the lesson) he will split the practice balls he hits into 3 piles. 6 balls, 4 balls and 2 balls.

He will make lots of practice swings before each ball and will hit the first 6 balls in a step by step fashion working on the new move.

The next 4 balls he will swing in slow motion trying to feel himself going through the new move before swinging on and hitting the ball.

The final 2 balls will be as he would on the course. Aiming at a target and trying to hit a draw or a fade to the target. There should be now conscious technique thoughts for these shots.

This first sessions is clearly stacked in favour of working on the technique.

He may do the same thing in the next session too.

By the third session, Derek should be moving on to less technical thoughts and more ball flight thoughts, so he will reduce the balls in the first pile and add to the last pile.

4 technique/ 4 slowmo/ 4 target

He may do this for 2 sessions before then reversing the original piles so that he finishes the week hitting:

2 technique/ 4 slowmo/ 6 target

By practising in this manner you have a structure and a plan for getting the technical aspects of the swing improving, but also still working on getting the ball out there to the target.

Golf is not all about pretty swings (or we would never have heard of Jim Furyk!) it’s about getting the ball in the hole.
