Extension through impact

Many players believe the right arm should be straight at impact, this is incorrect. The right arm should be straightening, but not yet straight.

The right arm should only be straight at a point after impact, usually when the clubhead is about 1 foot past where the ball was.

To learn how to do these, we teach our pupils a drill where we place a tee peg in the ground in front of the ball on the correct path and have them feel like they are swinging down and out towards this tee.

Start of doing this with short and slow practice swings, before gradually building up to hitting full shots with a ball. Try also putting the ball on a tee, as we want to concentrate on the swing at this point and not worry about the contact with the ball.

Downswing pump for sequencing: A David Leadbetter drill

I like to use this drill to help players learn the feeling for the correct sequence of movements in the downswing.

It’s almost like a dress rehearsal, where the player can make the backswing and then start down to feel where everything is going, before they actually do it for real.

Really all you are looking to do is feel the downswing start with the hip bump to the target, this drops the hands and the elbow comes in close the the side.

The only thing that will be left to do is to rotate hard through the ball with the hips and arms.

Swing on your knees to learn a level release

Get down on your knees and swing to learn to release the club on a flatter and more level plane.

This drill is just for practice swings, but the feelings it brings to your hands and arms can really help you to swing through the ball.

By doing this you will find it impossible to swing excessively from in to out or out to in. The ground just gets in the way!

You will also learn the feeling for rotating the arms through the impact area and it will help you improve the timing of the release.

Once you have a feeling for this, stand up and recreate the feelings in some practice swings, then take it to the ball.

It’s all about the feelings and trying to keep these same feels when swinging through the ball.

Turn the right foot to control ball flight: Jack Nicklaus tip

Jack Nicklaus spoke about controlling the ball flight on the course by turning the right foot.

To hit the ball lower he would turn the right foot/ toe inwards which would restrict the amount of shoulder turn. It would also force the weight more towards the front foot.

By doing this the ball would fly lower than normal, but not excessively.

To hit the ball higher he would turn the right foot/ toe outwards to get extra shoulder turn and keep the weight back.

By doing this he would be able to hit the ball a little higher.

By doing this he was able to adjust the flight slightly without consciously changing anything in the swing.

Next time you’re on the range give it a try.

Swing from the inside with the insider drill

Learn to flatten the downswing and come from inside by using the insider drill.

In this drill we are going to be swinging under a clubshaft which is sitting on top of a practice ball bag or basket.

The club shaft should be horizontal, be about 1ft behind the ball and the grip end on the ball to target line.

The idea here is to swing back and through without touching the club. By doing this the swing plane will shallow out and force your path to be from the inside.
