Practising Alignment

It’s a problem we all face on the course. How to get aligned properly and to know that you have aligned yourself correctly.

For me it all becomes part of the pre shot routine, but only if practised correctly.

I like to practice my routine and set up a lot. I practice on the range and even in the house.

The first thing to do is to have an intermediate spot on the ground in front of the ball to indicate the ball to target line.

In the video I placed a yellow ball in front, but another peg tee will do when practising.

Next lay a club shaft or cane on the ball to target line. This will make it easier to get the foot line parallel which I mark out with another cane or club.

Remove the cane from the ball to target line and go through your full pre shot routine. Remember to play a shot here, just exactly like you are on the course.

I was practising draws, so I set up slightly closed and started the ball right of the intermediate target.

Always be playing shots, not golf swings!

Fixing the chicken wing swing

The dreaded chicken wing swing! Slicers all over the world suffer with this move, caused in part from an excessively out to in swing path.

The real cause though is the lack of rotation of the left arm which makes the arm separate from the body.

If you watch Zach Johnson through the ball, the left elbow gets very high when compared with other top pros.

This is because of his very strong grip. He holds off the rotation of the left arm through impact on purpose to keep the clubface square all while swinging through the ball on an inside to inside path.

Coil drill: Create a little more resistance in the backswing for power

Many people swing without creating any coil or resistance in the backswing.

There needs to be some resistance between the upper body and the lower body if you are to generate maximum power and clubhead speed.

This drill will help you find the feel for coil in the backswing by restricting the amount the body can turn. Use this feeling during practice and watch as you drives fly further on the course.

Extension drill: Straighten the left arm in the backswing

A common problem faced by many golfers is the lack of width in the swing caused by bending the left arm at the top of the swing.

To fix this we need to extend the right arm, which in turn will straighten the left arm.

If you try to straighten the left arm with the feelings in the left side, you will most likely cause unnecessary tension in the swing.

Try the drill in the video and get the feeling for the correct positioning of the arms at the top and then take these feelings into your normal swing.

Fix a hook with this one quick drill

A common problem for many of the better golfers is to struggle with hooking the ball.

A good golfer can usually fix a hook with this simple drill in practice.

Placing the ball on the turf a hitting it from there with the driver forces you to make some adjustments and compensations.

It’s often better for a golfer to find these adjustments naturally rather than getting into technical swing thoughts. Usually practising this drill on the range for a few minutes will get the job done.

Once you have started hitting the driver well from the ground try teeing the ball up on the course a little bit lower than normal.

If facing a shot on the course where hooking it would cause a big problem try teeing down low which will be easier to hit than off the deck but have the same effect.
